Sicily is the area with the oldest winemaking tradition on the Peninsula. In addition to having one of the largest vineyards in Italy, the island has been one of the most important centers for the spread of viticulture in the Mediterranean basin. Vineyards grew spontaneously in the region, just like wheat, making it not only a cultural but also a culinary heritage to protect and enhance.
From the 8th to the 3rd century BC, viticulture flourished thanks to the Greeks, who introduced pruning and the espalier technique, as well as planting several grape varieties brought directly from their homeland. The vine became central in symposia and Dionysian festivals, acquiring new meanings. The vine’s value at the time is also evidenced by certain coins, such as a silver one from 500 BC, depicting Dionysus' head on one side and a bunch of grapes on the other.
The development of viticulture in Sicily further consolidated during the Roman period. The most widespread wines in ancient Rome came from Sicily, as well as from Lazio and Campania.
The Arab domination (827-1091 AD) hindered viticulture due to the religious prohibition of consuming alcohol. However, viticulture was not entirely suppressed, as evidenced by the works of many Sicilian-Arab poets who praised the quality of the wines and the vastness of the Sicilian vineyards. The Arabs are credited with founding Marzamemi, reclaiming the lands of Pachino, building aqueducts, and planting citrus groves.
Between 1870 and 1885, when phylloxera devastated French vineyards, the demand for Sicilian wine surged, causing the island's vineyard area to triple in a short time, exceeding 320,000 hectares (17% of usable land), particularly in the provinces of Siracusa, Catania, and Trapani. This period was short-lived: the pest spread quickly, affecting Sicilian vineyards as well. Replanting on American rootstocks lasted for over half a century, until the vineyards were fully restored in the 1960s.
The second decade of the 20th century was a period of great activity in the Val di Noto. Following the example of Marquis Antonino Starrabba, who played a key role after the destruction of phylloxera, the area became filled with wine cellars. Among them is our winery, built around 1925 by a family of Genoese merchants.
The arrival of the railway in 1935 gave a boost to the spread of Sicilian products both in Italy and abroad. However, it was from the 1970s onward that the development process began, allowing Sicilian wine to establish itself in the international wine scene.
